AA and the evangelical discipleship meeting

I spent this morning in a coffee shop that isn't my usual coffee shop. For some reason, in this coffee shop I seem to always overhear some sort of "discipleship" conversation.  I will admit, I feel it the moment I walk through the doors: a small group huddled around a table, bibles poised to lookup a common passage screams evangelical Christianity.  I know it well.

Today's group seem to be some sort of leadership team from a local church – probably the youth ministry leadership.  Again, something I know well.  T thing thst struck me during my eavesdropping, was how much the conversation resembled an AA meeting.  One by one they went around sharing their recent failures and asking one another to pray for these weaknesses.  Little focus is put on the successes and the joys of following Jesus.  I have been to enough AA meetings with to see a similarity.

Living Symbolic

"By their example of a truly Christian understanding of the world, expressed in a living and active application of the Christian faith to the human problems of our own time, Christians manifest the love of Christ for men, and by that fact make him visibly present in the world."

Foundarts, the alternative arts collective I started with friend and artist, Jamie Mulhern, is a part of Sound in the Ground tomorrow night (May 17th @ 8-12am) at the Mesa Arts Center.  Sound in the Ground is an art event that features "whatever we can think of to enhance your experience of the amazingly cool art exhibits that are in Mesa Contemporary Arts."  This is the last SIG of the year so if you miss this one, you will have to wait until the Fall.  In other words don't miss it.

A bunch of cool bands, a dj, a cash bar, free snacks, and the art exhibits of Mesa Contemporary Arts – should make for an very interesting night.  Stop by the Foundarts table and show your love if you can make it.

Stop by the MAC website or the SIG Myspace page for more info.

Mixed Emotions

Not to sure how to feel about this. I feel for those who lost a friend, a dad, a husband, a pastor, and a friend, and yet part of me is relieved that an era that arguably did more harm than good is over.  Nash has said it much better here.

Taco Day Dos Update

Taco Day Dos is history.  The annual taco marathon was a huge success and last year's numbers were crushed.  Here's the final totals:

110 people
406 tacos
$930 raised for charity

Thanks to all who came and helped support Save the Family, those who helped in the kitchen, and special thanks to my beautiful (and amazing) wife, Kelli for being the brains behind the operation.

Check out the time-lapse videos of the day:

A couple of links…

Here area few links that are worth passing on…

Running the Numbers – the latest series of photos from artist Chris Jordan that puts into perspective the enormity of American consumption.  This is a great example of how art can serve as a tool for social awareness and action. via Gizmodo

The Burrito Project – a network of localized chapters that make burritos to share with the homeless.  This is a grassroots effort without leader, agenda, or headquarters.  Check them out on the web or on myspace.

Happy surfing.

“The Gift” by Lewis Hyde

For the past few weeks I have been slowly pouring over a book that has been on my list for a while, "The Gift" by Lewis Hyde.  The copy I have, a gift itself from Kester, is a hardcover UK reprint of this work exploring the concept of "gift economy" (compared to the "market economy" that pervades all of modern and especially American" life).  I am a few chapters in and while I am far from being able to offer any sort of review, I want to blog bits and pieces of Hyde's words that strike me as thought-provoking, dead-on, challenging, or otherwise intriguing.  So here it goes:

"Most artists are brought to their vocation when their own nascent gifts are awakened by the work of a master.  That is to say, most artists to art by art itself.  The future artist finds himself or herself moved by a work of art, and, through that experience, comes to labor in the service of art until he can profess his own gifts.  Those of us who do not become artists nonetheless attend to art is a similar spirit.  We come to painting, to poetry, to the stage, hoping to revive the soul."  – p.48

Taco Day Dos

A week from tomorrow (Saturday the 12th) is Taco Day Dos – 12 hours of tacos.  If you love (or even like) tacos, hanging with friends and strangers alike, and a good party -you've got to check this annual event out.  There's a fundraiser involved as well.  Find out more at the "offical" taco day website.
