three stitches, a pink bandaid, and a red popsicle

08-21-07_1940.jpgI should start this post by clearing stating that I hate hospitals.  I know that in order to be the places of healing there are, they must also inevitably be places of death as well, but it just seems that my first experiences in hospitals were much more of the later and I can't get over it.

Tonight I had the privilege of seeing the insides of two East Valley hospitals, Chandler Regional, where good friends Matt and Adrienne were busy having their first child (a little boy named Ryland), and Banner Desert, where I sat with my daughter as she got her first two stitches (which is two more than her dad has ever had I should add).

It was a busy night, but an interesting one filled with the smells and sights of new birth, smiling first-time fathers, emergency room weirdos, and kids damaged while playing their favorite sports.  At the end of it all – Kirra got three stitches, a pink bandaid, and a red popsicle.  I'll leave it at that – for you to imagine how she might have ended up needing stitches – I am not sure I have the whole story myself.  The important thing is that Ryland Gibson has arrived and is doing well despite being several weeks early and that my little girl braved her first emergency room experience in a way that would make any dad proud, despite a few much-understood tears.

unFOURgettable @ Windup tonight

unfourgettable.jpg

I blogged about the guys of Windup Gallery before. The owners, Anthony and Lindsay, have become friends and are supporters of our fledging artist collective, FoundArts.  They've only been open a few months, but have put on some great shows that have brought some "never-before-seen-crowds" (at least in Mesa) to downtown Mesa.  Tonight they kick off another show from 7-10pm showcasing Four female artists that will be there in person (which should be killer).  I am excited to see the work of these artists (especially Shaunna Peterson who has a tattoo-art vibe I like) and am taking the kids tonight to check out the scene.  If you can make it, come on by to support the local arts scene, have some complimentary drinks on Windup, and breathe in the smell of an actual developing (non fine-art) art scene in downtown Mesa.

Six Feet Under

six-feet-under.jpegThis morning I am working from a coffee shop in Downtown Mesa.  Usually when I work in public spaces (which I love) I have to put my headphones on and let my itunes library keep me focused on my work.  But today I forgot both my computer charger and my headphones and have had to the distraction of conversation and noise while working.

A few minutes ago, I couldn't help but overhear a group nearby talking about the HBO series "Six Feet Under".  Six Feet Under is my favorite television series and it's final episode moves me emotionally beyond what I have ever experienced by a single episode of TV.  Seeing the film, "Once" this week has got my mind racing about the possibilities of film/video as an art form that communicates in a way that no other form of art can.   The conversation I overheard today reminds me once again of that truth.

If you haven't seen Six Feet Under, you must allow yourself the opportunity to get to know that characters, to become immersed in the story, and to wrestle with the inevitable reality of death, it's unpredictable approach and the fear it generates in us all. While this series is secular one, little focusing on the spiritual questions of death, for Kelli and I watching the series in it's entirety had a deeply spiritual impact on our lives and our own wrestlings with death.

The series is over, but you should be able to rent all five seasons worth at your local Blockbuster or via NetFlix if that's how you roll. Even better, your local public library might have it for free :).

Art at it’s best

 once.jpg

I rarely think of art as I watch most movies today.  Most are products to be consumed rather than artistic "gifts" to be inspired and challenged by.  It's depressing in fact to think about the vast number of movies produced and released only to turn a quick and easy profit.  The film industry is a great example of how we've reduced the voice of the artist for the sake of profit.

But I am thrilled by the release of a movie currently in theaters called "Once".  It is a brilliant film that is pure art.  It is a film about music, love, and a dream.  Much of the story is told through song, which is brilliant and more effective than dialogue in this case.  The music is perfect, human, real, and inspired.  The music, the story, and the brillance of it all is deeply moving as it reminds us that dreams, love, and creativity push through a world ruled by harsh "realities" and staunchy thinking.

You must see this film and afterward you will probably buy the soundtrack as well.  And as Zach has said well,

"The best thing about the movie is listening to the soundtrack afterwards and you’ll find yourself reliving the scenes in the movie through the music."

A Symbol Manifesto

This past weekend with the amazing people who make up Symbol, we explored our conviction as a community.  What we came up with smacks of a manifesto – something I am thrilled about.  Here's what we came up with:

Our expression of community must include:
the poor
the redemption of what it means to be “Christian”
a learning of Spanish
the care of the environmentas spiritual practice
a belief that the present reality is as important as the future reality
a kingdom theology/praxis
laughter/enjoyment of each other
fun
being a people of action/not just talking
a multigenerational community (all ages)
sexually sensitivity towards the gay/lesbian community
the humble pursuit of truth
kids
inclusivity
a community that becomes a voice for the voiceless

Our expression of community must avoid:
a callous/apathetic existence
a cynical nature
a self-focus

It will be interesting to see how this manifesto develops as we travel further down this road.  I'll keep you posted

The 2007 US Soliton Sessions

In a couple of weeks, this year's Soliton Sessions will be taking place in Ventura, CA.  This event has been the highlight of my year for the past two years as it has become a gathering space for relationships and dialogue that have challenged and inspired deeply.  Those involved in Soliton represent a variety of voices (both from the US and from the UK), a variety of experiences, and a variety of perspectives that create a diverse and dimensional experience.  Not to mention that these people of Soliton are some of the most hospitable, generous, and radical people you'll meet. Look into headed to Ventura August 9-12 for this annual pilgrimage.
I am sad to say that I am unable to make it this year, but was able to catch this year's earlier event in Northern Ireland.  For more information about the Sessions or about the Soliton network, visit their website at http://www.solitonnetwork.org.

On Silence

It's awkwardness unsettles us.
It's vacancy haunts us.
We never find quite enough of it.
Yet it is the place where our soul is revealed,
and the lover of our soul embraced.

Ahhh… Shark Week starts today

sharkweek.jpg

Lately, I have found myself watching the discovery channel almost exclusively.  Between Deadliest Catch, Dirty Jobs, Man Vs. Wild, Survivorman, and the Mythbusters (which as geeky as it is, is terrible entertaining to me) I can't seem to get enough.  But this week's discovery channel programming has me really excited.  It's shark week.  The 20th anniversary edition.  This means 24hrs a day for the next 7 days, I know without a doubt I can turn on Discovery and see something worth watching.  Why is it that sharks are so interesting and so terrifying all at the same time?  Maybe next week I have a better answer for you:)

7 days in Mexico

I am leaving this morning on a week-long trip to rural Mexico.  I am stowing away on a local church's student ministry trip that's led by two good friends of mine.  I am an extra set of hands.  Should be a great experience.
